Message from South and Vale District Councils

Published: 04 January 2024

Good evening Town and Parish Councillors,

We’ve had a number of Flood Warnings issued in South and Vale, which means flooding is likely – you can see this information on this live map. The river levels are still rising, and with the heavy rain we’re currently seeing in many areas of our districts, it’s likely we’ll see further warnings.

Where can residents find more information about flooding?

The Oxfordshire Flood Toolkit, has all the information residents need to help keep their properties safe:

The county council is responsible for overseeing Emergency flood responses and has a page on its website that you can direct residents to here: https://news.oxfordshire.gov.uk/river-levels-in-oxfordshire

The Environment Agency also has a flood helpline, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:

  • Telephone: 0345 988 1188

  • Textphone: 0345 602 6340

The county council also has regularly updated information on its website at: https://news.oxfordshire.gov.uk/river-levels-in-oxfordshire

The key messages for residents in areas at risk are to do what they can to protect their properties from flooding.

All residents should also follow this advice:

  • Avoid driving through flood water and avoid towpaths.

  • Flood water is not clean and not suitable for children to play in. There might be hidden hazards under the water such as manhole covers that have lifted. Anyone who has been in flood water should wash their hands at the soonest opportunity.
