Here is the latest Benson & Berinsfield neighbourhood update from Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Rebekah Kent and PCSO Sarah Talbot.

The Benson & Berinsfield neighbourhood also covers the parishes of Nuneham Courtenay, Culham, Clifton Hampden, Dorchester, Shillingford, Warborough, Berrick Salome, Benson, Ewelme and Brightwell Baldwin.

The level of crime in this neighbourhood is still rated as average. The average number of crimes has decreased from 61.7 to 48.7 which is great news! This is a 21.1 percent decrease compared to the same time last year (March, April, May).

The crime categories are: burglary (8.7 percent decrease), robbery (100 percent decrease), vehicle crime (50 percent decrease), violence (77 percent increase), anti-social behaviour (ASB) (16.9 percent decrease).

More information about the above figures can be found on the Thames Valley Police website under Local Crime mapping www.thamesvalley.police.uk

Anti-social behaviour

Dealing with incidents of ASB is a priority in our neighbourhood; the most common way we can deal with incidents of ASB is by issuing anti-social behaviour contracts (ABCs), anti-social behavioural orders (ASBOs) and Section 59s (contracts for using a vehicle in an anti-social manner). We currently have a few people on ABCs and Section 59s and one on an ASBO. These people are closely monitored by us and breaches of contracts are recorded. We work alongside the ASB team at South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) and SOHA housing.

Incidents of ASB are still on the decrease which is all round great news for us all. The last couple of months the Abbey Sports Centre have battled problems with young people causing a nuisance for members and staff.  We have worked with the centre, youth club and the ASB Team at SODC to reduce these problems and many of the young people have been banned for a three month period to reduce the problems. This month we have only received one report which is a great improvement.

Problems occurring around the Dorchester Lakes are still apparent judging by our reports and findings on our patrols around the area.  In the last few weeks damage has been caused to boats in the area. Known young people are congregating in this area due to the good weather and setting up camps for the night. We are dealing with these young people by means of ABCs. Thank you to everybody who has alerted us to these problems and we will continue to monitor this area into the summer.  Please report any suspicious behaviour to the Police.

Queensford Lakes, Burcot Lane, Berinsfield have been visited by sunbathers and swimmers during the warm weekends.  Please be advised this area is not suitable for this sort of activity due to the boats and jet skis in the area. If you do not have a membership you will be asked to leave.

Using vehicles in an anti-social manner

Section 59s are a useful method for us to stop vehicles being used in an anti-social way. If the individual is caught they are issued with a Section 59 warning; this applies to the person and the vehicle, so if caught again we can seize the vehicle involved or any other vehicle that driver may be driving, under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.

During a “Have Your Say” meeting outside Benson Primary School on 9 June, at approximately 3pm, a grey Vauxhall drove past the school in an erratic manner without due care or attention for pupils and parents leaving the school.  PCSO Talbot was able to stop the vehicle and speak to the driver and a Section 59 was issued.

Reports of off road/mini motorbikes have decreased down to one report since previous months, thanks for all the reports that have helped us stop these individuals.

Parking is an issue for many neighbourhoods. It has also been identified in the Berinsfield and Benson Neighbourhood. Particular problems occur surrounding the schools and shop areas. You may already be aware that PCSO Sarah Talbot and PCSO Rebekah Kent are trying to tackle the parking issue around schools by carrying out a good parking initiative with pupils. We have been to Warborough, Culham and Benson primary schools and given a presentation to pupils regarding this issue.

We will be continuing to monitor the parking at these locations, in particular the corner that joins the High Street and Oxford Road in Benson. We have also received complaints about inconsiderate parking near to Castle Square, Benson and Westfield Road. Vehicles parking here cause an obstruction to oncoming traffic and present a danger to people trying to cross the road and use the pavements. Berinsfield Parish Council and local residents have identified owners parking too close to junctions especially near Lay Avenue. Households in this area will receive warnings about their parking. Please remember it is illegal to park within ten metres of a junction.

Following recent reports of obstructive parking, £30 tickets have been issued and will continue to be issued should the problem persist. Please can I remind all road users that parking illegally and/or causing an obstruction carries a fine of £30, or the cost of having your vehicle removed.

We have also had reports that a lot of litter is being left around our neighbourhood; please can I remind you that depositing your litter in a bin can save you a fine of £80. Dog Fouling also carries a fine of £80 if the mess is not picked up and disposed of correctly. Culham Parish Council has highlighted The Glebe and playing areas as a hotspot area so we will be carrying out more patrols here.

General information/observation request – incidents in your area and arrests.
Please can you help with the below incidents?

Do you have any elderly family or friends? Pick up your free purse bells from Berinsfield and Benson Libraries. Attach the small bells onto your purse or valuables and be alerted if they are dropped or stolen.

PCSO Sarah Talbot carried out the quarterly Environmental Visual Audit in the Benson and Berinsfield Neighbourhood with a volunteer.  We identified damaged road signs, broken fences, fly tipping and graffiti. The problems were minimal and we are working with partnerships to get them rectified.

Thank you to all the residents who attended our “Have Your Say” meetings across the area, your attendance and interest is valuable to us in helping to identify your issues that we can deal with.

Thursday 24 June PCSO Sarah Talbot will be attending RAF Benson Primary School so they can meet and greet their local officer.  The pupils will have the opportunity to ask questions and check out the Police vehicles.

Sunday 27 June PCSO Sarah Talbot will be at the Benson Summer Fete.
